Here's Adele Geras' Very Selective Book Meme, lifted out of comments and given a post of its own
1) A book that changed my life:
Primo Levi - If this is a man. One of the great books of all time and should be required reading for everyone.
2) One book that you've read more than once:
Louisa May Alcott - Little Women
I used to read this once a year as a child and as an adult, I've read it about twice in the last thirty years. I still love it.
3) A book to take to a Desert Island:
The complete works of Shakepeare. Everything's there...
4) A book that made you laugh:
Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons
5) A book that made you cry:
I cry at almost everything, but how about The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett?
6) A book I wish I'd written:
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
7) A book I wish hadn't been written:
Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say that, but I'm not keen on The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R.Tolkien...apart from anything else, it's led to a positive plethora of fat fantasy novels with maps in the front...not to my taste at all.
8) Currently reading:
Books for the Children's category of the Costa Book Awards (ex- Whitbread award) but on my off days, I'm reading A thousand Lies by Laura Wilson.
9) Book I've been meaning to read:
The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. There are some (no names, no pack drill!) who have advised me not to bother, but it's been on the shelf for ages. Must try it at least.
