There's always been an order to these homecomings
In the door, unpack the gifts.
Plenty of time for the next bit, pot of tea, eggs and bacon, open the post, washing machine meltdown.
Priorities, we are the family of the travel gift.
There is no question, if any one of us travels anywhere we bring back something for the others. The kayaker, usually reduced to penury on his travels, now brings back a stone from each river he paddles. It's free, probably would not be a good idea if everyone did it, but we have the rivers of the world in a bowl on the kitchen table to show for it.
Offspringette upheld the gift tradition and I have been delighted with mine.
Any great Aussie read was my parting shot, so I'm very excited to finally get a copy of Eucalyptus by Murray Bail all the way from Books Kinokuniya in Sydney, complete with eco-bag.I've also gained a frog and a lizard for the frivol corner on my desk.
But look, I also have a lovely little Ugg boot for my keys, I am Mrs Ugg Boot around the house but forbidden to wear them outside for fear of Colleen Rooney lookalike remarks. I think Uggs are probably so the year before last that I'm safe now.
Finally a pen from Sydney Olympic Park and the last gift is a sound effect.
The child who could mimic ANYTHING now does a mean impersonation of a kookaburra.
There's been trouble over in the desk frivol corner already, Jane "Crocky Dundee" Austen has her hands full and will that pen be as mighty as a sword?
I'll keep you posted.
