I often get e mails like this and just had to share this one from Vintage Classics because I for one will be very much looking forward to these, my thoughts on Cold Comfort Farm here...
Stella Gibbons is best remembered for her first novel, Cold Comfort Farm, but she wrote over twenty books. Like Nancy Mitford, PG Wodehouse and Barbara Pym, her novels are deliciously funny and her dissection of the British class system is spot-on.
‘[Gibbons] actually wrote another 23 novels before her death in 1989, and the ones I’ve read all show the same supple wit applied to the eternal tussle between romanticism and common sense… Stella Gibbons is the Jane Austen of the 20th century’ Lynne Truss
Vintage Classics will publish fourteen of Stella Gibbons’ novels between August and November 2011, including Conference at Cold Comfort Farm, the wickedly funny sequel to Cold Comfort Farm, with a new introduction by Libby Purves; Westwood with a new introduction by Lynne Truss; Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm with a new introduction by Alexander McCall Smith and Starlight. These charming books will delight Gibbons’ legion of fans and also introduce her work to a new audience.
