I have been the happy recipient of not one but two lovely parcels from Australia in recent weeks. The first from...
Taking a break from his job in the Outback, the Kayaker spent some time in Melbourne visiting a very old family friend recently.
A lasting wartime friendship of the Tinker's with a fellow boy bugler gained us an honorary Aunt and Uncle after the war. If anyone has the Tinker's little memoir Bugle Boy, check out the cover photo and it is the lad on the right, whilst the Tinker is on the left.
Arthur and his wife Joan were childless and doted on my brother and I as children, then they headed off to Australia on the £10 ticket in the 1960s, settled in Melbourne, though never losing touch with us, and always sending us a parcel at Christmas, eventually including presents for our own children too. I have always seen it as a wonderful kindness and we love the little influx of Australian gifts each year so we really did owe a lot of thank yous. With this in mind the Kayaker went to visit while he was there, and stayed on for a few days, as well as taking a turn around the city and finding me a library, a bookshop and some gifts... bless the boy.
And my thanks to Jude who sent me a wonderful parcel of these..
I have already done some of this...
Mouthwatering and just about salvaged enough from darting hands to make a Spiced Almond Cake a la Mary Berry. It didn't look anything special until you cut a slice and reached the layer of marzipan that is baked in the middle, gone before I could even take a picture.
More almond recipes and suggestions gratefully received.
I have given in to an acute bout of Berry-itis at the moment and am baking my way through her little book of cakes.
Copies are available for about £3 on 'you-know-where' and this has to be the best value cake recipe book around.
Somehow it feels incumbent upon me to really finally perfect the Devonshire scone, and Mary to the rescue. I'll admit I was quite pleased with this batch...
In fact...go on, find some clotted cream and jam, and help yourself.
