I've been thinking... it's always dangerous I know ..but before I embark on this, and refine it a little, I thought I would gauge if there was any interest.
As you know I am LOVING my garden and the hedgerows this year, and one of the things I have been doing almost daily is collecting seeds and drying them. I've never had the time before but I wander up and down the lane and around the garden with my yogurt pots giving things a rattle, and getting stung to death as I reach the unreachable bounty...always a laden stem just beyond my fingertips and with nettles in the way.
I find a patch of something around the garden and have to post a DON'T STRIM notice as I wait for pods to ripen, or seedheads to dry, but the collection is growing, more than I could ever use, so I'm wondering if we can somehow set up a seed swap on here??
I know there are websites that do similar, and venues to go to, but I would love to do this with people I feel I know rather than strangers... can't go swapping seed with every Tom Dick and Harry :-)
So firstly I am very happy to do some swapping if anyone has excess, and it would be lovely to grow some of the things here that grow in your gardens there, and in return I can send you a little bit of the Tamar Valley. And perhaps when I do the blog post people could say what they have to spare if they wanted to join in, and then, as I have access to e mails, I could put you in touch with each other ??
Do you think it might work??
And secondly not everyone has seeds to swap, that's fine and no reason to be left out because I would still really love to share this, and for others to enjoy some sowing and watching and waiting as I am doing this year, and you could plant a little dovegreygarden, so if not swapping it would be a case of sending me a stamped addressed envelope and I will post a few packets to you. I'm not going to sell them, I'd be too terrified that nothing grew, or it came up a different colour and everyone asked for their money back, and I would already have spent it on next year's ideas, besides which I'd have to do instructions and mostly I don't have the first clue either...a lot of trial and error and watching videos on youtube here.
Sadly I fear this whole thing will have to be to UK addresses only as I am sure there must be regulations and I would probably be arrested for trying to export, though thinking about it there would be no reason why those living in the same country couldn't swap with each other... we could manage it somehow I'm sure.
I would post a list of what I have available as and when... it will be our lovely daisies, plenty of wildflowers and whatever else I have. Safe to say anything I collect is from a highly sustainable source, as in we can barely get out of the gate for wildness and the garden is surrounded by it on four sides too. So no worries about depleting the countryside, though the general advice is never to sow wild flower seed from elsewhere beyond the confines of your own garden for fear of upsetting the status quo of your local environment.
The wildflower list will include Red Campion, Bluebells (yes, they can be grown from seed and I think I have cracked the right time to collect and dry them this year) Foxgloves, Tufted Vetch, Yellow Toadflax and whatever else reveals itself in quantity around us here....currently I am eyeing up the Feverfew and...and..
So anyway, do let me know in comments if you think this is a possible plan, and if so I'll launch the Seed Swap soon.
