On the subject of children's picture books, as I was the other day, here's another favourite Our Cat Flossie by Ruth Brown.Flossie is Miss Independence herself, we don't have a Flossie, but meet the DGR cats all the same.
We've had a most unusual event and it happens only about twice a year, all four cats home for food at the same time and completely oblivious to each other (also unusual) They spend most of their time, and certainly all night outside around the fields, until they hear the clunk of the cat food tin or smell a fire being lit and then it's just a blur of fur flying towards the house from distant corners.
Meet Dusty, Rocky (easy to spot Lardy Boy) Tess and Muffin, now all 12 years old.
So
that's the two sisters on the ends and the brother and sister in the
middle. It works like this, Tess (think Dallas and she's Pammy) wants to be loved by everyone and has
never ever scratched any of us, but Muffy (Sue Ellen)hates her and
Muffy the floozie, loves to snuggle up to Rocky (JR).He will however tolerate basket-sharing with any of them as
long as he has the most space, except Dusty (who was the one they all hated on Dallas?)that is.However if Dusty
grabs the basket first the others sulk and refuse to cohabit. They all
hate her but Dusty couldn't care less and will often move in with the
horse that lives in the field in the front of the house when things get
a bit miaoooooweeeee.
Dusty is a complete and unco-ordinated
purr-dribble machine and only has eyes for the Bookhound (who was a
confirmed cat hater for years, but I hate mice more so the cats won the
day) Muffy always creeps up and curls up on the bed while I have a cup
of tea in the morning, but will switch allegiance to Offspringette the
minute she walks in the door.
They all run a mile when the
Gamekeeper walks in the house...except Rocky who adores him.The GK has
that aura of loaded shotgun/rifle about him, in fact he's usually
carrying one plus a skinning knife and of course it's the deer stalking
season and that's an aura + aroma all of its own...all a bit unnerving
for sensitive felines.
It's all very complex, this cat psychology, and Rocky doesn't leave much space for the others anyway
