Since I have known Ernest Hecht of Souvenir Press we have had this ongoing football banter. Ernest is an Arsenal fan and never misses a match, sitting in a very comfortable seat and watching his team win everything going, while the nearest we have down here is Plymouth Argyle...say no more.
The joke has been that if ever Argyle played Arsenal at the Emirates stadium Ernest would offer us his guest seat (also very comfortable).
Well all extremely unlikely until today when half of the city of Plymouth, the Green Army, has migrated to the Emirates stadium for the unlikely FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Argyle, the Gunners versus the Pilgrims.
A man of his word and true to it, Ernest made contact weeks ago and it was all organised.
Quite coincidentally Bookhound's birthday weekend and so many thanks to Ernest who has saved us having to wrap up more gifts.
We sent Bookhound off to London yesterday to allow plenty of time to get to the stadium, partake of a champagne lunch with his host and watch the match as his birthday treat.
He's just phoned so that I could hear the singing and now I'm listening to the match on the radio and knitting furiously to stave off the tension because we quite thought it would be 12-0 to the Gunners at half time (Argyle's current form decidedly of the defeat variety) and...well I hate to jinx the whole thing, but half time and so far it's a miraculous 0-0.
