'I prefer to write. When I sit down and write, words grow very docile; they come and feed out of my hand like small birds, and I can do almost what I will with them, whereas when I try to marshal them in the open air, they steal away.'
That's our Brodeck talking and wow, what a day that was!
It's the day after the day before and Episode One of Not the TV Book Group discussing Brodeck's Report by Philippe Claudel.
I've never seen so many virtual wellies outside the door and you should see the state of the kitchen, but what a
brilliant daylong discussion we had. An unexpected bonus for me was how
good it felt to think so carefully about a single book for a whole day, not just the
couple of hours of a book group gathering or even the fleeting moments
of a TV or radio programme. It gave plenty of time for everyone to take
their time and have their say, go off and watch the rugby and come back
to find new ideas had surfaced and been shared, and for others to pick
up on them and add more, and it's all there as a permanent record which
I hope does the book and the first episode of NTTVBG proud.
I've belonged to lots of online reading groups in my time, but nothing as good as this...so good that I think any more words from me are a bit superfluous, so I'm going to let that post and, at the last count, its 106 discussion comments speak for themselves today and a great big thank you from all of us to everyone who took part.
I'm now very excited about reading the next book and moving on over to Savidge Reads on Sunday February 21st when we will be talking about The Girl with Glass Feet by Ali Shaw.
It's never too late to join us, everyone is welcome, just dip in and out of the series whenever you want to if that suits, we'll be there.
