...because ours is galloping away after such a slow start, and isn't July wonderful...most of the hard work of growing and planting out done and now's the time to sit back and enjoy it
We have bells ringing all over the place... Canterbury Bells..
and Bells of Ireland (Moluccella laevis.) Native to Turkey and in cultivation since the 1500s, and interestingly, from the same packet of Higgledy Garden seeds, one tray germinated while the other did nothing, but we love them and will definitely be growing again...
Sweet Peas have been filling every vase since the end of May...Lord Nelson (blue) Queen Alexandra and Air Warden, (red) Miss Willmott (pink) Noel Sutton (blue) and Captain of the Blues (obvs)
In amongst them, Matucana, a more delicate two-toned purple, apparently the most scented variety there is, and another one that we have really loved, Wiltshire Ripple..
The joy is that we can collect the seeds from these for next year and buy some more new varieties to add in.
The greenhouse is now given over to tomatoes...
and a few other mad and exotic experiments...
Aubergine...
Melon...
and Cape Gooseberry ...saw the plants for £1.50 and couldn't resist having a go..
We have had some failures too, or rather some plants that are like a food bank for the slugs and maybe too much like hard work to protect...Lupins, Nicotiana. The Tinker has been a martyr to these Lupin 'Sunrise' and they are a picture...
Others equally hard work to protect, and requiring a nightly slug patrol with the salt (sorry...we take no prisoners) but we love the flowers so much it's worth it.
So we have our first miniature sunflower...Tom Thumb, with Little Dorrit catching up fast
Whilst the big guns, the Earthwalkers are making their way up the canes...
Oh yes, and the Hollyhockery...all leaf and no flowers...should we live in hope or pretend it's rhubarb...
So tell me...what's looking good over your way...
