Honestly, this gardening lark, it's a good job we don't open to the public. Heap big mess thanks to several weeks of almost continuous rain and stormy winds. Everything has flopped flat or sideways, the weeds have gone berserk and the snails have had a right old feast.
We have the National Collection...
Actually, looking at that picture I'm feeling a bit bad about the salty massacre now because they really are quite pretty when you stop and look.
But, just look at the Hostas...
...and this one's even worse despite my best efforts at nightly snail raids.
Like a pot full of doilies.
I think I am supposed to say a snail is a snail and it's only doing what a snail does and it deserves to live...hmm.
We wondered where the dahlias were until we realised they were being eaten as fast as they sprouted. Battle tactics ensued and there is some hope. However, the roses that were doing so well are now rotting before they flower. Poor old Evelyn was revving up for her best show and now this...
And the ornamental poppies threatening to be the best ever with this surprise flower from Coral Reef..
Have either been blown to smithereens by the wind or succumbed to the rain.
Any vestiges of hope must now rest with the opium poppies which are springing up everywhere, and may just be aspiring to greatness and signalling the way forward because clearly snails don't like them...
And if just one of these is last year's stunning Black Peony all will be forgiven...
I have to admit the sweet peas are doing their best to climb...
And the Sweet William carry on regardless because nothing seems to bother them...
And I suppose Clematis 'Niobe' is doing her best under very trying conditions..
I was on the brink of surrender when I started writing this, but then, seeing the pictures, I thought it might not be so bad after all.
Except we had a heat wave.
How about you...
And what else don't slugs and snails like because that's where I'm going with this garden now.
